That may sound a little odd considering about 3 hours ago, I discovered someone had busted my window to get at my GPS in my much dearly loved Scion, but there really is a good side to all of it. When I went downstairs this morning in the rain to see if my friend Ellen (who went to me to the Season 2 launching party for On the Road With iV at Estilo in Austin) had left her camera in my car. As I approached my car, I thought, darn I let the window down, but as I got closer I saw my window had been broken and my GPS was gone. Not my favorite way to start the day, but then I noticed Ellen’s camera on the floor, and my day got a little brighter. Because not only did I not want my friend to lose her cute little red Sony Cyber-shot, but we had some hot pictures on it from last night’s party I wanted to share with everyone!
The sweetie pie maintenance man at my apartment offered to cover the hole in my car with a plastic bag, and after making the reports to the police and insurance companies, of which neither will do any good since my deductible is $1,000), I got online to find a place to get my window fixed. And 3 hours later, I am back at my computer blogging away, with a brand new window in place.
So finding Ellen’s camera was certainly a bright side, but the story gets even better! 1st off, I was astounded when I found out that the people at Glass Doctor (Airport Blvd.) could have my window fixed within an hour. Coming from tiny secluded Alpine, things rarely happen fast, much less lightening fast! Then when I got there the owners, Mike and Cathy Shanahan, had a loving Golden Retriever which they were kind enough to let me take for a walk. Then there 22 year old daughter came in with a UT Lacrosse jacket on, which gave us something in common to about since my daughter is playing on the UT lady’s rugby team. Then I met a woman and her son whose window had been broken in the burglar’s mission to steal his GPS as well. And just like my burglar, he had only gone for the GPS and didn’t touch the other valuables in his car. But I could see that this kid’s life is pretty good, too. 1st off, this 16 year old boy had bought his car on his own. That right their tells me he has character. And I could see where that character came from, because I heard his mother pointing out all the bright sides of what most kids would have been angry about. She told him that they were fortunate because they both had the day off to go get the window fixed, that they could have stolen his billfold he had left on his seat, that they were lucky they were in a “position” (loved that word for some reason) to afford a replacement window. See she could have told him how irresponsible he was, and made him feel guilty about the whole thing, but she chose a different direction.
I have been feeling sorry for the young generation growing up in a world where all that seems to be reported about is the bad news. The world is going to end soon, seems to be the message. But maybe that mentality is just what’s going to drive we parents to point out the good things that can come from the bad. It’s the making lemonade out of lemons mentality that we are seeing more of, and the good thing that’s going to come of all the bad in the world right now.
Okay, I’m posting this as is. Because if I don’t I’ll be behind on tomorrow’s thoughts and I already have to catch up with yesterdays news. Ellen and I had so much fun at the party last night, and were offered free motorcycle lessons in exchange for blogging about our adventure.
Right now I have to get ready to go to my next appointment with Score Austin. After going to several of their workshops and seeing volunteer Richard Jozwiakowski at them all, I researched him and discovered he wrote a book about change management, “I Love Gray”. He volunteers at the office on Fridays and I was lucky enough to get an appointment.
Like I said life is good.
