Blizzard, Philadelphia, and Handel’s Messiah

March 16th, 2010

Isn’t it wonderful to know that there IS an end to the seemingly endless winter we’ve all been experiencing? You can just smell it in the air (or, in Alpine, in the 45-mph gusts).

I’m Susan Lowrance, the new Manager of Communications, here to help John and Robin continue to spread the word about our amazing innerSpirit rattles created by hand in the high desert of far West Texas.

John recently returned from the Buyers Market of American Crafts in Philadelphia, amidst record-setting blizzards slamming the entire Northeast, and here’s his report:

Finally made it to Philly!

John and Hannah Davis finally made it to Philly!

The Philadelphia Story

Despite weather delays getting into Philadelphia, my daughter Hannah and I eventually made it to that wintery wonderland, but many exhibitors and buyers weren’t so lucky. We had the shortest setup time ever … good thing Hannah and I can work together in tight spaces, with the minimal rolling of eyes.

As always, it was a great opportunity to reconnect with our many long-time customers and to meet new ones and introduce them to our innerSprit rattles.

On our nightly trips back to the hotel, I was always intrigued by the odd shapes in the 3- and 4-foot snow mounds along the sidewalk. One night, something sitting on top of the snow, that looked to be a script of some sort, caught my eye. It was an old, well-used music book of Handel’s Messiah. I dried it out and found there was a name on the inside cover. Hannah Googled the name, and was able to contact a very excited music enthusiast who said that the book had been a gift many years ago from a beloved music professor and that he had indeed been in Philadelphia in December for a Messiah concert that ended up being cancelled. We mailed it to him as soon as we returned to Alpine.

Connecting in Houston on our way back, we paused to breathe the warm, humid air and thought, “ni-i-i-i-ce” We arrived back in time for a whopping 3-inch snow right here in our own favorite neck of the woods that was gone by noon. I always enjoy going to shows, meeting new people and greeting old friends … but there’s something about coming back to the peace and quiet and unhurried-ness of home.

Wishing everyone our very best this spring (and beyond),

John
