Rattle Your Worries Away (now with recyclables!)

August 18th, 2009

Summer is the most beautiful time of the year in far west Texas. With help from the much needed rains, the desolate Chihuahuan Desert landscape transforms into an awe inspiring canvas of greens, pinks, and purples. But the mountains aren’t the only thing going green around Alpine, TX- home to J. Davis Studio for over 30 years.

John Davis’ new collection of spirit rattles features an innovative way to recycle. His colorful new palm sized treasures have tumbled glass inside . The beautiful sound is now produced by something that was destined for the local landfill.

Located in the tranquil and vast Big Bend National Park region, the area is rich with mystery. Alpine neighbors Marfa, home of the Marfa Ghost Lights, and the “Chisos” mountains, a word used by American Indians that means ghost or spirit.

J. Davis Studio is best known for their line of raku potteryRaku is a firing process that originated in Japan, but the rustic look creates the essence of an ancient civilization, like an artifact unearthed from one of the 10,000 year old Indian campgrounds around the nearby Rio Grande.

J. Davis Studio spirit rattles retail for $24 to $35 and can be found in major catalogs, art galleries and gift shops across the United States and Canada . For a list of current retailers, visit www.JDavisStudio.com.
